My staff, my shoes, and other random stuff

A few random thoughts on my return to work after being away at a conference last week:

1) My staff is insane. One of my staff members requested 19 wednesdays off in a row and then told me he was "dumbfounded" because I said that he could have 19 DAYS off this summer but not 19 of the SAME day because we then wouldn't have coverage. He actually spent several paragraphs going off on me about how this job was getting in the way of his life and how he really wants to find a new job. Then at the end he said that he certainly means no disrespect.

2) 3 1/2 inch heels are, as a rule, good only in theory. I am wearing my 3 1/2 inch (probably closer to 4 inch) semi-goth boots today because I was testing them out to see if I could last the day in them because I want to wear them out on Saturday. I mainly want to wear them out because I need to give a strict talking-to to a friend who I haven't seen in a while and it's tough to be tough when the person you're talking to towers over you by a foot. But, it looks like I may just have to be Mini Me on Saturday because I just don't see these working.

3) Back to my staff... Another of my staff members actually watches me write everything down and then tells me if I don't write something why it would be important to write. I want to yell "I'M YOUR BOSS"

4) I hate working in a Union environment. I'm sure there are very good things about Unions (yes, I know, thank the Unions for the weekends) but I've been threatened by more than 1 Union grievance already and I'm only on month 6 of this job. But I wonder if there's a place in NJ where I don't have this problem...

So, to sum up: Unions, bad. Staff, bad. Big heels, bad.
