A Moment of Silence, Please.
For those of you who know nothing about the DC area, this will mean nothing. For those of you who do, or know music (GOOD music), and who have not yet heard the news, you may be devastated:
HFS IS DEAD!
WHFS is a classic DC radio station, part of the fabric that is the DC area. They play(ed) alternative stuff, all kinds of new music, with great older stuff mixed in. For lack of a better explanation, it's a place that understood the Barenaked Ladies line about "No Juliana next to my Evan" and yet also played the Distillers, Interpol, the Killers, etc. It's also the foundation of the HFStival, a music festival like no other which attract(ed) 65,000+ fans each summer.
As of noon yesterday, WHFS became "El Zol" -- all latin radio, all the time. This was done with virtually no notice and no respect for all the fans who've been listening for some part of their 40+ year history. All this because the Latin market is, well, more marketable.
So, please bow your heads and have a moment of silence for the death of a legend, while I scream loudly about the commercialization of all things good.
