My Spring Vacation, by Karen

Remember when you were a kid, and the first assignment on the first day of school was always writing something about your summer vacation? Mine always pretty much sounded the same -- went to Point Pleasant, sun good, rain bad -- but with any luck, you were supposed to write about something you had learned over your break.

So, after my vacation last week, here are the things I've learned:
* Sun (80 degrees in Tampa) good. Cold (40 degrees when I arrived back at BWI) bad.
* Tan good. Burn bad.
* Tan or burn good when everyone else (ya know, everyone in Baltimore/DC) is pale as a ghost.

In addition, I've also learned that any vacation that revolves around sports (Baseball on Thursday, Hockey on Saturday, way too much college basketball all weekend) is good. As is any vacation that revolves around catching up with old friends, and spending every night up until 1:30 because the two of you can't seem to shut up and just go to bed.

According to Bill Early, I'll be going to Spring Training again next year, since he's decided that he and I will be making the trip together. Of course, he thinks we should go see the O's. I'm not exactly opposed to the idea, but there's something that even the scrubs on the Yankees have that the O's will never have. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it's there when I read the plaques for the retired yankees, and when I get my picture taken next to the one for the Mick.

Oh, one more probably very obvious comment. Vacation good, work bad. That's not my job, because I'm probably happier than most, but just work in general, compared to laying on the beach. But, since I'm a fan of food and shelter, it's off I go, back to the grind, my 65 awaiting emails and my students who, despite being on spring break themselves, always seem to need something.
